About two years ago, I hated art. With the exception of one person. But I didn’t like art because I couldn’t understand it and I didn’t like it because I felt I was horrible at it.
Seriously, you guys – you would have believed me. The best thing I could draw was a headless stick man. But over the next couple of years, I started to get a little more interested in art…and as a part of my senior history course, I studied art for a whole week. Finally it made sense! I could understand it – not really from an artistic point of view, but from a historian’s point of view. It was fascinating.
And one day last year, I sat down with my sketchbook and just lettered. I added some color from some ink stamps. It was so much fun! I spent most of the morning just making art. And over the next weeks, I kept doing it.
When I went up to meet Allison, she gave me some watercolors – which were so much fun to use! Over time I’ve acquired more art supplies, but I still use those watercolors every time I paint.
I started with filling in words and making small dot flowers, and moved up from there. I mainly stick with watercolor and ink, but I’ve since taught myself how to paint actual objects. It took a lot of trial and error, and many erased sketches, but I take it slow. The more I focus on enjoying the process, the less I’ll get frustrated when it doesn’t turn out the way I envision it. (Or see it on the computer screen.) I get better every time, and I’m trying to learn how to paint harder objects.
Next up? Charcoal. I want to teach myself how to sketch.
What’s your favorite art medium? And which art did you like the best?
P.S. I’m Calvinist, so today (election day) is my favorite day! XD XD
